We have.

There is no denying that scent affects mood and emotions, with some scents reducing stress and anxiety and even increasing focus. However, conventional skincare brands use fragrance at a 15% or more concentration in their formulas, which may trigger allergens such as dermatitis, asthma, and headaches. High concentrations and toxins may disrupt hormones and increase serious health risks.

Currently, African American women are the leading demographic in beauty product spending, leaving us significantly affected by the toxin exposure from our favorite products. Exposure to toxic chemicals during critical periods of development, such as puberty and pregnancy, can trigger adverse health consequences, including cancer, impact fertility, pregnancy, and neurodevelopment.

While the European Union places heavy restrictions on the use of around 1500 chemicals in cosmetics due to cancer, genetic mutation, and reproductive and developmental harm, the FDA only restricts the use of 11 chemicals in cosmetics. In a study on the differences in personal care product use by race/ethnicity, black women used the most fragranced products overall. This, coupled with the information that chemical exposure is also harmful to male reproductive health and their ability to conceive, causes concern for us all. 

As the purchasers of skin care products for our household, we are the gatekeepers of what comes into our homes for family use. Moūd Organics is working to limit this harmful exposure by using essential oils and fragrances free from parabens and phthalates. Our "Leone" fragrance-free collection was designed specifically for those taking a conscious approach to eliminate fragrance use. Our "Luxe" Collection uses fragrances free from parabens and phthalates for those who are conscious of their approach to skincare but still want to smell like their favorite designer scents. Finally, we will launch our "Essential" collection, which is scented with essential oils. This is self-care the way nature intended.
